Smart tires sound pretty amazing—will they catch on?

Under China's vigorous promotion, the electric vehicle industry has entered an unprecedented period of development. From the early days of Tesla's god-like status, to the subsequent surge of domestic and joint-venture brands in new energy vehicles, and now the entry of internet giants like Xiaomi and Apple into car manufacturing, the new energy vehicle sector has reached a fever pitch. Modern cars are becoming increasingly intelligent, with infotainment systems rivaling smartphones, and autonomous driving features poised for imminent adoption. In contrast, tires have remained largely unchanged, failing to keep pace with the rapid evolution of automobiles.

The concept of smart tires remains somewhat vague to many, as they haven't yet become mainstream. Most people react with skepticism: “What could possibly be revolutionary about tires? They're just a circle, right?” Yet, a reality we must confront now and into the future is this: without tire support, an autonomous vehicle becomes nothing more than scrap metal. Achieving true self-driving capability hinges fundamentally on the car's ability to “get on the road” and remain in constant motion.

This is precisely why we gather today to explore the untapped potential of tires—this critical component—in the autonomous era. While everyone discusses driverless technology, what role must tires play? Smart tires incorporate computer chips or integrate them with the tire structure. They autonomously monitor and adjust operating temperature and pressure, maintaining optimal performance under varying conditions. This enhances safety while reducing operational costs.

Smart tires have existed for some time, but only as concepts.

Michelin's “Vision” 3D-Printed Concept Tire

This futuristic tire features a honeycomb-like structure made from biodegradable materials. It incorporates RFID sensors and replaces the traditional tire-rim assembly with its unique honeycomb design, enabling load-bearing capabilities while delivering superior comfort and reduced noise. Michelin's use of biodegradable materials not only makes these tires ideal for autonomous vehicles but also prioritizes environmental sustainability!

Goodyear Spherical Tire

Goodyear unveiled its innovative Eagle-360 Urban concept tire at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show. This 3D-printed spherical tire integrates intelligent sensing, decision-making, deformation, and connectivity capabilities. It continuously monitors road conditions and surroundings in real-time while assessing its own status. Using a neural network based on deep learning algorithms, it processes acquired information to determine appropriate responses and accumulates experience for subsequent optimization. It achieves deformation through an elastic tread design and tire/vehicle interaction. Its connectivity enables sharing of collected data and processed insights with other vehicles and all components of the Internet of Things.

Pirelli Connesso Tire Monitoring System

Pirelli Connesso is a digital platform that continuously collects real-time tire data via sensors weighing just a few grams mounted on each tire. This data is transmitted to the Connesso system's intelligent repository: the central control unit and Pirelli's cloud database. All information is analyzed and processed here before being transmitted to the user's mobile app. Notably, Pirelli Connesso operates both when the vehicle is in motion and when stationary.
